Spainish explorers were the first to claim Texas, but more than 100 years would pass before there were any settlements.
Since nobody was really around, France decided to try and stake a claim. It succeeded briefly, but Spain recclaimed its land and kept it until Mexico won its independence from their European relatives. Citizens of Texas became Mexicans, and were relatively happy until Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna took power, and tossed out the old peaceful constitution. The Texans revolted against the Mexican government and won their independence in 1836. They were an independent republic until they became the 28th state in the United States of America in 1845. When the Cival War broke out, Texas joined the Confederates. After Union victory, Texas rejoined the U.S. where it still resides today. |
