So you want to talk like a Texan? Though the dialect of true (4 generations or
more) born and bred Texans can be very difficult to learn, here are a few words and phrases to get you started. |
ain't -- 1. I'm not 2. are not
idn't -- isn't
whatchadooin -- What are you doing?
goin -- going
fixin -- fixing
ya'll -- you all
varmit -- 1. annoying creature 2. rat or other small rodent
yonder -- over there
kinfolk -- family
howdy -- hello
pardner -- partner
git -- get
shut out that light -- turn off the light
Have you ate? -- have you eaten?
feller -- fellow
yeller -- yellow
rattler -- rattlesnake
folks -- people
shut yur yap! -- please be quiet (heehee)

As a general rule of thumb, you can drop your G's, and run most of your words together, leaving out a letter or two, and
you'll be all right. But be careful, seasoned Texans can spot a fake accent from a mile away! |
spoilt -- ruined
"I ain't never knowed nobody who cain't talk like a Texan!"
